These magnificent water color paintings by the noted Victorian minimalist, Kenneth MacLeay RSA, were commissioned by Queen Victoria herself. They depict retainers of the Royal Household at Balmoral, and individuals from around Scotland representing the principle clans and their followers. The original paintings now reside in HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s private collection in Windsor Castle.
In 1870, colored lithographs of the whole series were collated in a twin-volume publication measuring 22x19 inches, entitled HIGHLANDERS OF SCOTLAND, which also described each individual character depicted in the paintings (some of which we have used here.) Victorian author Amelia Murray MacGregor separately recorded detailed notes on various of the portraits and some of our individual image descriptions are also taken from her observations.
